It happens, and not on your calendar. OpenAI’s API policy says preview models “may be retired with much shorter notice, such as 2 weeks.”
In June 2026, a U.S. export-control directive forced Anthropic to “abruptly disable” two of its models for all its customers. One came back 19 days later. The other returned only in part.
